“Introduction to Using a CAC Linux Cluster” Workshops Available

ITHACA, N.Y. – Dr. Andrew Dolgert will lead a hands-on workshop called an “Introduction to Using a CAC Linux Cluster” from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21 at the Carpenter Library ACCEL “Red” Classroom on the Cornell University campus. This same workshop will be repeated in its entirety from 10:00-12:00 noon on Thursday, April 22 at the same location. Faculty, staff, students, and Corporate Program members are welcome.

Workshop participants will learn how to use a cluster of Linux computers to run scientific applications. Topics and hands-on sessions will include:

  • What is a cluster
  • How to connect to a cluster using SSH and X-Windows
  • How to work with files and directories at the command line
  • How to use a scheduler to automate the running of scientific applications

Participants do not need previous experience using a Linux command line. They may use computers that are available in the workshop classroom or their own laptops.

The workshop leader, Dr. Andrew Dolgert, is a computational scientist at the Cornell Center for Advanced Computing. His interests include computer simulation, visualization, and large data management. He has a PhD in Physics from the University of Virginia. Dolgert’s recent publications include "Provenance in High-Energy Workflows" in Computing in Science and Engineering and "A Multi-Dimensional View on Information Retrieval of CMS Data" in the Journal of Physics.
