ITHACA, N.Y. – Building upon Cornell’s Virtual Workshop (VW) online learning platform, the Cornell Center for Advanced Computing (CAC) and the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) added new training modules to the Ranger Virtual Workshop, bringing the total number of modules available to 22. This on demand learning resource includes modules focused on data analysis and visualization, as well as advanced programming and MATLAB programming. It is available for free to academic researchers, student scientists, and industry at http://www.cac.cornell.edu/ranger/.
New additions include an advanced MPI module that engages learners in how to customize an environment for derived data types, virtual topologies among processes, and parallel I/O using MPI-IO. A balancing scripts and codes module has also been added that demonstrates where within an application scripting is a smart choice.
Modules currently available include:
- Introduction to Linux
- Introduction to C Programming
- Introduction to Fortran Programming
- Python on Ranger and Lonestar
- Balancing Scripts and Compiled Code in Scientific Applications
- MATLAB Programming
- Parallel Programming Concepts and High-Performance Computing
- Ranger Environment
- Message Passing Interface (MPI)
- MPI Point-to-Point Communication
- MPI Collective Communications
- MPI One-Sided Communication
- MPI Advanced Topics
- OpenMP
- Hybrid Programming with OpenMP and MPI
- Profiling and Debugging
- Optimization and Scalability
- Computational Steering
- Large Data Visualization
- ParaView
- VisIt
- Using Databases
The Ranger Virtual Workshop is self-paced and features quizzes and a user notebook that tracks and bookmarks the learning experience. TeraGrid and TACC users also benefit from consulting support. Over 4,300 students have accessed the Ranger Virtual Workshop since it was launched in 2008.
Cornell developed the Virtual Workshop online learning platform in 1995. The VW platform has undergone continuous evaluation and enhancements since then. Most recently, it was selected as the HPC education platform for the DOD User Productivity Enhancement, Technology Transfer and Training (PETTT) program.
The Cornell Center for Advanced Computing (CAC) is funded by Cornell University, the National Science Foundation, public agencies and industry partners, including ANSYS, Avere Systems, Boeing, Corning, Dell, High Performance Technologies, Inc., Intel, MathWorks, Microsoft, and NVIDIA.
