FOR RELEASE: September 5, 2013

ITHACA, N.Y. - Two National Science Foundation-sponsored training workshops on parallel computing on the Stampede supercomputer will be offered in October to the national research community at Cornell University.

Stampede is an Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) resource located at the Texas Advanced Computing Center at The University of Texas at Austin. The system is a nearly 10 petaflops (PF) Dell Linux Cluster based on 6,400+ Dell PowerEdge server nodes, each outfitted with 2 Intel Xeon E5 (Sandy Bridge) processors and an Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor architecture. The aggregate peak performance of the Xeon E5 processors is 2+PF, while the Xeon Phi processors deliver an additional aggregate peak performance of 7+PF. The system also includes a set of login nodes, large-memory nodes, graphics nodes (for both remote visualization and computation), and dual-coprocessor nodes.

The first workshop, “Parallel Computing on Stampede: Introductory Topics,” will be held on October 23, 2013. Topics will include:

  • Stampede programming environment
  • Parallel programming concepts
  • OpenMP (and lab)
  • Message Passing Interface (MPI)
  • Hybrid parallel overview
  • Introduction to MIC (and lab)
  • Visualization

Prerequisites are programming experience in C or Fortran and a basic knowledge of Linux.

The second workshop, “Parallel Computing on Stampede: Advanced Topics,” will be held on October 30. Topics will include:

  • Stampede programming environment
  • Data transfer
  • Optimization and scalability (and lab)
  • Profiling and debugging (and lab)
  • MIC (and lab)
  • Vectorization (and lab)
  • Introduction to CUDA (and lab)

Prerequisites for the second workshop are programming experience in C or Fortran and a basic knowledge of Linux, plus familiarity with parallel computing.

These workshops, 9 am – 5pm each day, will consist of lectures and labs conducted by consultants from the Cornell University Center for Advanced Computing (CAC). Lab exercises will be conducted on Stampede. CAC staff will be available during the training sessions to assist users in their code development efforts.

The workshop concepts will readily transfer to other high-performance computing platforms. There is no fee to attend either workshop.

Additional information on the workshops is available.

The one-day workshops require separate registrations (you must register for each one). You will need to create an account on the XSEDE User Portal before you can register.

If you have questions, please submit them to the XSEDE Help Desk.
